The House
An uncompromising commitment to less, since 1871.
Our History
- 1871Maison Ouden is established by MaƮtre Ouden in a small, well-lit atelier, in which nothing was made, to exacting standards. The founder is reported to have said very little, and to have meant all of it.
- 1889The first Box of Nothing is presented to an international exposition. A distinguished panel examines it for some hours and reports that it can find no fault.
- 1912A second atelier is opened directly beside the first, doubling the House’s output of nothing without any increase in materials.
- 1924The Certificate of Authenticity is introduced. It is signed, sealed and, for the first time in the history of commerce, entirely accurate.
- 1937Thirty seconds of silence are first decanted, from a very quiet room, under the supervision of three silent witnesses.
- 1958The cellar of compliments is laid down. The first vintage is left undisturbed for twelve years, at the end of which it was found to have matured considerably, and to have said nothing.
- 1969The House observes silence throughout the Moon landing. It is widely regarded as the finest hour in the House’s history, and the only one for which no record exists.
- 1983An attempt is made to digitise the collection. Nothing is lost in the process.
- 2026The Parcel is introduced, and the ceremony of unboxing moves to the web, at no cost to Nothing.
History as recorded by the House. Dates are approximate and entirely reliable.
Our Vision
To be the most trusted house of nothing in the world, and to remain, in that capacity, unrivalled, unhurried and unnoticed.
Our Mission
To place a carefully chosen nothing in the hands of the people who matter most to you, with a degree of ceremony that the nothing has done nothing to deserve.
Our Strategy
The House pursues a disciplined, long-term strategy built on five pillars.
- Absence at scale. Nothing is infinitely scalable. The House intends to supply it to everyone, at once, without a single additional unit being produced.
- Vertical integration of nothing. The House controls its supply chain from raw nothing to finished nothing, and has never once experienced a shortage.
- Heritage-led innovation. Each new Gift is rooted in a tradition of absence going back more than a century, which we have rigorously left unchanged.
- Selective distribution. The House sells through a single channel: the Sender, using the Sender’s own devices.
- Zero-based budgeting. Every year begins at zero, proceeds through zero, and is expected to conclude at a figure of broadly the same magnitude.
Strategic Roadmap
| Horizon | Objective |
|---|---|
| Year 1 | Less. |
| Year 2 | Even less, with improved presentation. |
| Year 3 | A modest expansion of the collection, none of which will be visible. |
| Year 5 | Consolidation. Further consolidation. Nothing. |
Our Values
- Discretion. We do not discuss our clients, our methods or our contents.
- Restraint. If a thing can be left out, it is. If it cannot, it is left out anyway.
- Ceremony. A gift of nothing deserves more occasion than a gift of something.
- Candour. The House has never claimed that a Gift contains anything.
Governance
The Board of the House convenes in silence at intervals determined by no one. Resolutions are carried unanimously, by the customary means of not being opposed. Minutes are not kept, and are consequently always accurate.
Sustainability
The House is committed to responsible stewardship of the planet. The carbon footprint of its Gifts is, to the best of its knowledge, negligible. Its supply chain is entirely local, being located wherever the Gift happens to be, and it produces no waste, having no inputs.
Recognition
The House has received no awards, in keeping with its principles, and has politely declined several.
